What is the FOUND Framework — and why does every local service business need one?

Fatima WessonIf you've spent any time on the Honeyrock website you'll have seen us talk about something called the FOUND Framework.
It comes up a lot. On the homepage. On the How It Works page. In pretty much every conversation we have with a new client.
And there's a good reason for that. It's the backbone of everything we do. Every service we offer, every piece of content we build, every system we set up — it all sits within one of five steps.
So in this article we're going to explain exactly what the FOUND Framework is, what each step means in practice, and why having a framework — any framework — matters more than most local service business owners realise.
Why most marketing doesn't work for local service businesses
Before we get into the framework itself it's worth understanding the problem it was designed to solve.
Most local service businesses approach marketing in one of two ways.
The first is doing nothing and hoping word of mouth keeps the phone ringing. This works — until it doesn't. Referrals dry up. A good customer moves away. A quiet winter turns into a very quiet spring. And suddenly you're wondering where the next job is coming from.
The second is doing random things. A Facebook post here. A flyer there. A website that was built three years ago and hasn't been touched since. Maybe a brief flirtation with Google Ads that cost a fortune and produced nothing. None of it connected. None of it building on anything else.
The problem with both approaches is the same: there's no system. No logical order. No sense of what to do first, what to do next, and what to keep doing forever.
The FOUND Framework is the system. Five steps. In the right order. Each one building on the last.

The five steps
- F
Fix your foundations
Everything starts here. Before you spend a single penny on marketing, before you think about reviews or content or anything else — your foundations need to be solid.
Your foundations are two things: your Google Business Profile and your website. And they need to work together as one.
Your Google Business Profile is the listing that appears on Google Maps. It's responsible for around 32% of where you rank locally. Most businesses have one but most businesses have barely touched it — wrong categories, missing services, empty description, photos from three years ago.
Your website's job — and this surprises people — isn't to look nice or tell your story. Its job is to support your Google Business Profile. Every page should mirror and reinforce what your profile says about you, so Google has no doubt that your website and your listing belong to the same legitimate, trustworthy business.
Fix these two things first. Everything else builds on top of them.
- O
Own your area
Once your foundations are solid, it's time to start expanding your reach. This is the local SEO step — building the content that gets you ranking not just at your front door but across your whole service area.
Most roofing businesses in Surrey rank well right next to their address. Type in "roofer" and their postcode and they show up. Go a few miles away and they disappear.
Owning your area means building the pages — service pages, location pages, supporting content — that tell Google you genuinely serve every town and village in your patch. Guildford. Woking. Reigate. Dorking. Epsom. Farnham. Each one.
We track this on a rank map — a grid showing your Google position at dozens of points across your service area. Green means you're in the top three and getting calls. Red means Google doesn't think you cover that area yet. Every month we look at where the map is red and build content to turn it green.
- U
Unavailable to no one
Here's the step that surprises people most.
Being available when customers search for you is now a Google ranking factor. The fifth biggest one according to the most respected local SEO study in the world. A business that answers calls at 7pm outranks one that goes to voicemail.
This step is about making sure your business is always on — even when you're not.
An AI phone receptionist answers every call in your business name, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It handles the initial enquiry, answers common questions, and books the job straight into your calendar. A smart chat widget catches website visitors at midnight. A missed call text-back fires within seconds if a call somehow slips through.
No missed calls. No voicemails sitting there until Monday morning. No jobs going to the competitor who just happened to pick up.
- N
Nurture your reputation
Reviews are the second biggest ranking factor on Google Maps — accounting for around 20% of where you show up. And not just how many you have but how recent they are, how consistently they're coming in, and whether you're responding to them.
This step builds the system that makes all of that happen automatically.
After every completed job your customer gets a friendly text asking for a Google review. One tap takes them straight to your review page. No hunting around. No friction. Every review that comes in gets an automatic response — professional, warm, on brand.
Over time this compounds. Ten reviews becomes thirty. Thirty becomes sixty. And suddenly you're the most reviewed tradesperson in your area — which means the most trusted, and almost certainly one of the top three on Google Maps.
- D
Dominate the map
The final step is where everything comes together and compounds.
Your foundations are solid. Your content is building. Your calls are answered. Your reviews are coming in consistently. Now we focus on pushing you further and further up the map — and keeping you there.
Every month we run your rank map. We look at where you're in the top three and where you're sitting in position four, five or six — close but not quite there. Those are the areas we target next.
We also watch your competitors. If one of them starts making moves, we know before it affects your rankings.
This isn't set and forget. But with the system running it's also not something you have to think about. You just watch the map go green.
Why the order matters
Here's something important that often gets overlooked.
The FOUND Framework works because the steps are in the right order. Skip one or do them in the wrong sequence and the whole thing is less effective.
- ✗There's no point building content to own your area — step O — if your Google Business Profile isn't set up properly — step F. The content won't land the same way because the foundation it's built on isn't solid.
- ✗There's no point chasing reviews — step N — if you're not capturing every lead in the first place — step U. You need the jobs to get the reviews.
- ✗And there's no point trying to dominate the map — step D — if you haven't built enough relevance and authority through the earlier steps. You'd be pushing on a door that isn't ready to open yet.
The order is the system. And the system is what makes it work.

What this means for your business right now
Most local service businesses are somewhere in the middle of the FOUND Framework without knowing it. They've done bits of F — they have a website and a Google listing. They might have some reviews. But it's patchy. Incomplete. Not working together as a system.
The question isn't whether you need the FOUND Framework. Every local service business does if they want to be consistently visible on Google and consistently converting that visibility into booked jobs.
The question is where you are in it right now — and what the next step looks like for your specific business.
That's what our free FOUND Audit is for. We look at your current setup, work out which step you're at, and tell you exactly what needs to happen next. No jargon. No hard sell. Just a straight conversation about your business and what's possible.
