Why being available after 5pm is now a Google ranking factor

If someone told you there was a simple change you could make to your business that would simultaneously win you more jobs and improve your Google ranking, you'd probably want to know about it.

That change is availability. Specifically, being available — or appearing to be available — when your competitors aren't.

This one surprises people. It surprised us when the data first came out. But once you understand the logic behind it, it makes complete sense.

The ranking factor nobody talks about

Every year Whitespark — one of the most respected names in local SEO — publishes its Local Search Ranking Factors report. It surveys 47 of the world's leading local SEO experts and asks them what's actually moving rankings on Google Maps right now.

The 2026 report contained a finding that most local service businesses have no idea about.

Being open at the time a user searches is the fifth biggest ranking factor on Google Maps.

Not fifth biggest out of ten. Fifth biggest out of everything. Out of dozens of factors that Google considers when deciding which three businesses to show on the map — your categories, your reviews, your website, your links, all of it — being open when someone searches sits at number five.

And it gets more specific than that. Rankings begin to degrade in the final hour that a business is open each day. So if your hours say you close at 5pm, you start losing ranking ground at 4pm. Before you've even locked up.

Why does Google care whether you're open?

Think about it from Google's perspective. Its entire purpose is to give people the most useful, relevant answer to their search.

If someone searches for a plumber at 7pm on a Thursday and Google shows them a business that closed at 5pm, that's not a useful result. The homeowner calls, nobody answers, they're frustrated, they blame Google for showing them a useless result.

Google doesn't want that. So it learns. It starts preferring businesses that are actually available when people are searching — because those businesses are more likely to answer the call, handle the enquiry, and give the searcher a good experience.

It's not penalising you for being closed. It's rewarding businesses that are open — or that appear to be open and available — when customers need them.

When are people actually searching for tradespeople?

Here's something worth thinking about. When do people search for a roofer or a plumber?

Sometimes it's during the working day — someone at home notices a problem, picks up their phone, searches. But a significant chunk of local searches happen outside traditional working hours.

After work. In the evening when people finally have time to sort the jobs they've been putting off. At weekends when they're at home and noticing things that need fixing. Late at night when a problem suddenly becomes urgent.

A leaking roof doesn't wait until 9am on a Monday. A homeowner who spots water coming through their ceiling on a Sunday evening isn't going to wait until you open to search for help — they're searching right now.

And if your profile says you're closed, and your competitor's profile says they're open — or their AI receptionist answers at 9pm while yours goes to voicemail — Google knows which one is more useful to show.

Is your business missing out on local customers?

Our FREE FOUND Audit looks at your website, Google Business Profile, and local visibility to show you exactly what's working and what to fix first.

    The missed call problem

Let's make this even more concrete.

A homeowner searches for a roofer at 6:45pm. You show up on the map — maybe not in the top three right now, but visible. They call your number. You're driving home. You can't answer. It goes to voicemail. They don't leave one — nobody leaves voicemails anymore. They try the next business on the list. That business answers. They get the job.

That scenario plays out thousands of times a day across every local service in every county. Jobs lost not because the business wasn't good enough — but because nobody answered.

Now multiply that across every evening, every weekend, every bank holiday. How many jobs is that a year? At your average job value, what does that number look like?

We have a calculator on our website that helps you work this out. Most people are genuinely shocked by the result.

The solution isn't working longer hours

Before you start worrying that this means you need to be answering calls at 10pm — it doesn't.

The solution isn't you being available around the clock. The solution is your business being available around the clock.

    There's a significant difference.

An AI phone receptionist handles every call that comes in outside your working hours — and during them when you're on the tools and can't answer. It answers in your business name, sounds natural and professional, handles the initial enquiry, answers common questions about your services and your area, and books the job straight into your calendar.

The customer called. Someone answered. The job got booked. You find out about it when you check your calendar.

You didn't have to be available. Your business was.

    The double benefit

This is what makes the availability piece so powerful. It's not just about winning more jobs — though it absolutely does that. It's about winning more jobs and ranking higher on Google at the same time.

An AI receptionist that answers calls at 7pm tells Google your business is active and available in the evening. Your hours can reflect genuine availability because your business genuinely is available — through the receptionist — around the clock.

Businesses using this consistently show up higher on Google Maps than competitors with identical setups who go to voicemail after 5pm. The ranking difference is real and measurable.

It's one of the few things you can do that simultaneously improves your Google position and your conversion rate. Most things do one or the other. This does both.

    What your competitors are doing

Right now the majority of plumbing businesses close at 5pm or 6pm and go to voicemail outside those hours.

That means every evening, every weekend, every bank holiday — the homeowners searching for a plumber in your area are finding a wall of voicemails and unanswered calls. Most of them give up or call back in the morning — by which point they've often found someone else.

The local service business that answers those calls — consistently, professionally, at any hour — has an enormous competitive advantage. Not just in the jobs they win directly. In the Google ranking they build over time by being the business that's always there.

    A practical note on hours

One thing worth mentioning. If you update your Google Business Profile to show extended hours — or 24 hour availability — make sure you can genuinely back that up. Google's guidelines are clear that listed hours should reflect when the business is actually reachable.

An AI receptionist that genuinely answers calls around the clock means you can list genuinely extended hours with a clear conscience. The availability is real. And Google rewards real.
