Why the best roofer isn't always the one getting the most calls

Why the best roofer isn't always the one getting the most calls

This one might sting a little. Sorry in advance.

There's a roofer somewhere in your local area right now who isn't as good as you. Their work isn't as neat. Their materials aren't as good. Their customers aren't as happy. And yet their phone is ringing more than yours.

    How is that possible?

It's a question we hear a lot. And the answer is both frustrating and — once you understand it — genuinely exciting. Because if visibility is the problem, visibility is fixable.

Google doesn't know how good you are

Here's the uncomfortable truth: Google has no idea whether you're a brilliant roofer or a terrible one. It can't inspect your work. It can't talk to your customers. It can't look at your finished jobs and make a judgement call.

What Google can do is look at signals. Digital signals that tell it which businesses are active, legitimate, trusted and relevant to what someone is searching for.

And right now, those signals are telling Google to show other businesses before it shows you.

Not because you're bad at roofing. Because your digital setup isn't giving Google what it needs to trust you.

The three businesses on the map

When a homeowner in Guildford types "roofer near me" into Google, a map appears at the top of the page. Three businesses show up on that map. Those three businesses get around 70% of all the clicks.

The homeowner's roof is leaking. They're stressed. They want someone reliable, fast. They click the first name they recognise — or the one with the most reviews, or the one that looks the most professional. They call. They book. Job done.

You never even got a look in.

Not because you couldn't have done the job brilliantly. Because you weren't on the map.

What actually gets you on the map

Google decides which three businesses to show based on three things: proximity, relevance and authority.

Proximity is how close you are to the person searching. You can't control that.

Relevance is how well your Google setup matches what they're searching for. You absolutely can control that.

Authority is how much Google trusts you — based on your reviews, your links, your consistency across the web. You can control that too.

Most roofing businesses are losing on relevance and authority. Not because they're not relevant or authoritative in the real world — but because their digital presence doesn't reflect it.

The competitor who's beating you on Google? They probably have:

    • A fully completed Google Business Profile with ten categories and thirty services listed
    • A website that's structured the way Google wants to see it
    • A steady flow of recent reviews coming in every month
    • Their name, address and phone number consistent everywhere online

Is your business missing out on local customers?

Our FREE FOUND Audit looks at your website, Google Business Profile, and local visibility to show you exactly what's working and what to fix first.

That's it. That's why they're on the map and you're not. Nothing more mysterious than that.

The good news — and it really is good news

Here's the thing that should make you feel better about all of this.

The businesses beating you on Google right now aren't unbeatable. They're not some enormous operation with a massive marketing budget and a team of SEO experts. They're just a roofing business that got their digital setup right — either by luck, by learning, or by working with someone who knew what they were doing.

And everything they've done, you can do too. Often faster than you'd think.

We've seen Google Business Profiles go from invisible to ranking in the top three within weeks of being properly set up. Not months. Weeks. Because Google is actively looking for businesses to show — it just needs to be able to trust you first.

The roofer currently sitting above you on Google Maps started somewhere. They weren't always there. And you can take their spot.

Quality still matters — just not in the way you think

Here's where it gets interesting. Once you start showing up on Google — once you're one of those three businesses on the map — quality absolutely starts to matter.

Because now people can see your reviews. They can read what your customers say about you. They can compare you to the competition.

And this is where being a genuinely good roofer becomes your superpower. Because the system that gets you found also gives you the tools to collect reviews automatically, respond to every one of them, and build a reputation that compounds over time.

The roofer who currently sits above you might have the visibility advantage right now. But if your work is better — and your review system is working — you'll overtake them. And once you're at the top, staying there is a lot easier than getting there.

    So what's the move?

Start with your Google Business Profile. Pull it up today and look at it honestly. Does it look like the profile of a busy, professional roofing business? Or does it look like something that was set up a few years ago and forgotten about?

Then look at your website. Does it mention your services clearly? Does it mention the areas you cover? Is it fast on a phone? Does it match your Google listing?

Then look at your reviews. When did the last one come in? Are you responding to them? Is there a system in place to collect them consistently after every job?

These aren't complicated questions. But the answers tell you everything about why someone else is getting the calls you should be getting.

The best roofer in Surrey deserves to be the most visible one too. Right now, for a lot of great tradespeople, those two things aren't lined up. But they can be — and fixing it is more straightforward than you'd think.
