You're good at your job. Your customers are happy. You do quality work and you've built a solid reputation over the years.

So why is Dave's Roofing — the bloke you've never even heard of — showing up above you every time someone in your area searches for a roofer?

It's a fair question. And the answer has nothing to do with how good you are at roofing.

    Here's what's actually happening

When someone searches "roofer near me" or "roofer Guildford" on Google, something interesting happens. Before they see any websites, before they see any ads, they see a map. And on that map, three businesses appear.

Those three businesses get around 70% of all the clicks. Everyone below them — position four, five, ten, twenty — gets almost nothing.

Think about that for a second. Seven out of ten people searching for a roofer in your area are clicking on just three businesses. If you're not one of them, you're essentially invisible.

And here's the thing that surprises most roofers when we tell them: those three businesses at the top aren't necessarily the best roofers in the area. They're not the ones with the most experience or the longest track record. They're the ones whose Google setup is done properly.

That's it. That's the whole secret.

The map is driven by your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile — sometimes called a GBP — is a free listing that Google gives every local business. It's what shows up on Google Maps. It's where your reviews live. It's the thing that decides whether you appear in those top three spots or not.

Most roofing businesses have one. But most roofing businesses have barely touched it.

Here's what a neglected Google Business Profile looks like — and be honest with yourself as you read this:

    • One category selected — probably just "Roofer"
    • A handful of services listed, or none at all
    • A logo as the only photo — uploaded when the profile was first created
    • A business description that's either blank or three sentences long
    • An address or phone number that's slightly different to what's on your website

Sound familiar? You're not alone. We see this on almost every profile we audit.

And every one of those gaps is costing you rankings.

Why does this matter so much?

Google uses your Business Profile to decide whether to show you to people searching in your area. It's looking for signals that tell it you're a real, active, legitimate business that actually does what you say you do.

When your profile is incomplete, Google gets confused. It doesn't trust you as much as it trusts the competitor down the road who has ten categories, thirty services listed, forty photos of their work, and a fully written description.

Your Business Profile is responsible for roughly 32% of where you rank on Google Maps. That's almost a third of the battle — and it's entirely within your control.

Is your business missing out on local customers?

Our FREE FOUND Audit looks at your website, Google Business Profile, and local visibility to show you exactly what's working and what to fix first.

    The good news

Fixing this doesn't take months. It doesn't require a big budget. And you don't need to understand anything technical to make it happen.

Here's what needs to be done:

    1. 1

      Add the right categories

Google allows you to choose up to ten categories for your business. Most roofers have one. Adding the right secondary categories — flat roofing, roof repair, guttering, fascias — means Google can show you for a wider range of searches. More categories, more visibility.

    2. 2

      List every service you offer

Every single one. Roof repairs, emergency call-outs, new roofs, lead flashing, skylights, chimney work — all of it. Each service you add is another signal to Google about what you actually do.

    3. 3

      Add real photos

At least twenty. Photos of your work, your team, your van, jobs in progress, jobs completed. Google wants to see you're a real, active business. So do your potential customers. A profile with twenty photos of quality roofing work builds instant trust.

    4. 4

      Write a proper description

Google gives you 750 characters for your business description. Use every single one. Write about what you do, where you work, how long you've been doing it, and what makes you good at it.

    5. 5

Make sure everything matches your website

Your business name, address and phone number need to be identical on your Google Business Profile and your website. Character for character. Even small differences — "St" versus "Street," a different phone number format — are enough to make Google question whether they belong to the same business. And a confused Google won't rank you.

One more thing most people don't know

Keeping your profile active matters too. Google rewards businesses that post regularly, upload photos consistently, and respond to every review. An active profile outranks a dormant one — even if the dormant one was set up better to begin with.

This doesn't have to mean you're spending hours every week on it. The right systems can handle all of this automatically in the background while you get on with the roofing.

So what do you do next?

Start with your Google Business Profile. Pull it up right now and ask yourself honestly — does it look like the profile of a business that's actively trading and doing great work? Or does it look like something that was set up a few years ago and forgotten about?

If it's the latter, that's your answer. That's why Dave's Roofing is showing up above you.

The businesses showing up in the top three on Google Maps in your area right now started somewhere. They just got their setup right before you did.

The good news is that can change — and faster than you'd think.
